The last time that East Grinstead dropped any points in the Premier Division was back on 23 October when they visited Bowdon, but it seems that history has an uncanny way of repeating itself.
Bowdon, who were sixth in the table this morning, seemed really out to cause an upset from the start, and cause an upset they did when Ole Keusgen scored a goal in less than three minutes. Like a wounded lion, East Grinstead was quick to strike back. It took Danny Hall less than 60 seconds to equalise, and 15 minutes later he gave his side the lead from open play .
After an exciting start to the match, the game settled down to be a less frenetic pace. Simon Egerton equalised for Bowdon three minutes into the second half and what was largely an uninspiring half suddenly sparkled back into life when Ali Brogon put Bowdon ahead with five minutes left.
Although Richard Potton in the EG was partly culpable for at least one of the goals, he made a couple of important saves to keep his side in the match, and when 'Grinstead were awarded a penalty corner in the dying seconds it was obvious that the final outcome would depend on the outcome of the corner. It was to the relief of the East Grinstead supporters that the final whistle sounded seconds after Niall Stott's strike hit the back of the Bowdon net. History had indeed repeated itself. The score on their previous meeting? 3-3! Bowdon, however, may be disappointed to find that they have slipped down the table despite earning the point.
Pictures from this match will appear on our HockeyImages web site tomorrow.
The side nearest to East Grinstead, Beeston, closed the gap to four points with a 3-2 win over Hampstead. However, East Grinstead have one game in hand over Beeston, and two games in hand over most other sides in the division.
Women's Premier Divison Leicester are away in Abbeville this weekend, and Canterbury were able to capitalise on their absence by moving into top place on the back of a 3-0 win over Clifton. Every side in the division has now played 13 matches.
There were a number of late starts in the men's East Conference and we will bring you those results tomorrow. We understand that Leicester women have won their first promotion pool match, but we will post most news on this when we have the full result.
