THE ENGLAND HOCKEY LEAGUE SEASON RESUMES

Today's England Hockey League matches, the first full day after the winter break, were a mixture of scheduled matches and matches re-arranged from before Christmas as a result of the weather conditions.

One of the re-arranged matches was the Men's Premier Division meeting between Canterbury and Hampstead & Westminster. Canterbury's chances of surviving a season in the Premiership took a knock, when they went down 0-2 to their visitors. This puts H&W in third place, but they have played one more game than every other side in the division, save today's opponents.

The leaders in the East Conference, Southgate, have a late start today, when they play potential contenders Holcombe. We'll bring you the result later. Old Loughtonians maintained their challenge with an 8-1 win over St Albans, who remain rooted at the bottom of the table. The Saints will lose the services of their Matthew Vurton-Bowen, who received a red card in the 65^th minute. Another side who are contenders for the drop, Sevenoaks, had a surprise win over Indian Gymkhana, with their Ben Allberry and Mike Shelton both scoring hat-tricks in their 6-1 win away.

Men's North Conference leaders, Leek, did not play today, but they maintain a healthy lead at the top of the table. Ben Rhydding are still struggling at the foot of the table after going down 3-1 to Deeside Ramblers.

There were two matches in the Men's West Conference, neither of which involved the leaders. Bottom placed Stourport picked up a single point, their fourth of the season, when they draw against Havant.

In the women's Conferences, Surbiton maintain the charge at the top of the East by beating contenders Chelmsford 3-1 away. Things are very close at the top of the Women's North Conference, with only one point separating the top four. At the top of the West Conference, Buckingham, Isca and Trojans all won their West matches today, and only one point separates leaders Buckingham from second placed Isca.
