‘GRINSTEAD DEFY LEAGUE FORM AT WEMBLEY

The order in which the two teams for the men's semi final of the Maxifuel Super Sixes came onto the pitch at Wembley on Sunday spoke volumes about the form of the sides involved. In the first semi, Canterbury, who had finished the league in poll position were seeded against East Grinstead, who had finished fourth. But it soon became apparent that the league was going to be no guide to East Grinstead's performances at Wembley.

Canterbury was brushed aside, trailing 2-0 within the opening minutes, and although they staged a late recovery, they had a five goal deficit to claw back and only four minutes to do it. Final score 5-9 to EG.

EG were then into the final against Reading, who had dominated their semi-final against Beeston, with a 12-4 win. Reading proved to be tougher opponents than Canterbury, but East Grinstead were in the driving seat from the start, winning the match 5-2. 'Grinstead, even without Jackson, seemed a whole lot better side than we had seen in the league. Perhaps they just like the big occasion?

In the women's final Reading took an early 2-0 lead. But Sutton Coldfield managed to draw level by half time, and we were left wondering whether they could stage a recovery like they had against Bowdon Hightown in the semi final two weeks earlier. But it was a game of the proverbial two halves, with Sutton unable to find the net in the second half. Final score, 5-2 to Reading.

There will be a full report on the finals at Wembley in the March edition of our on-line magazine HockeyTalk. Pictures from all the matches are on our sister site a www.HockeyImages.co.uk.

IT’S A READING v SUTTON COLDFIELD FINAL. Last night at the Maxifuel Super Sixes Women’s Semi Finals

The women have long complained about the exclusion of their semi-finals from Wembley ever since the Maxifuel Super Sixes Championships moved there two years ago. But last night provided two high power and exciting matches in front of a reasonable crowd, with matches more entertaining than some of the women's semi finals from the days at the NIA.

The matches showed a uncanny similarity, inasmuch as the side that was losing made a desperate last minute attempt to rescue the position. However, the two matches were to end quite differently.

Reading had dominated in their match against the holders, Leicester, and had a comfortable lead for most of the match. But the final score of 3-2 to Reading demonstrates the nail biting finish the crowd were treated to.

The situation had been much the same in the match between Sutton Coldfield and Bowdon Hightown. In the dying seconds of the match, and at 3-2 down, Sutton had put on Jenny Parkinson as a kicking back. It was Parkinson who equalised from the penalty spot. And, with virtually nothing left on the clock, in the melee following a penalty corner, a shot from Vicky Woolford seemed to hang tantalisingly in the air before the falling into the Hightown goal. The hooter sounded almost immediately. Final score 4-3 to Sutton Coldfield.

Sutton Coldfield will meet Reading at the Finals at Wembley on Sunday 27 January.

PICTURES FROM THE MATCHES WILL BE ON www.HockeyImages.co.uk later today.

PARNHAM TO JOIN US SQUAD

Craig Parnham, assistant coach of the bronze medal winning women's GB team, has been appointed coach of the US women's national team. Below is the press release from USA Field Hockey:

USA Field Hockey announced today Craig Parnham, Assistant Coach at Great Britain Hockey for the past five years, who was part of the team that led Great Britain to the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, has been named head coach of the U.S. Women's National Team. Parnham will relocate to Chula Vista, California with his wife, Emma, in early February.

"This is a wonderful opportunity and a new challenge for me," said Parnham. "I think Team USA has a great deal of potential and I look at this as an opportunity for me to come in and make a big impact. I am excited to get out on the pitch and start working with the players on the team."

"We were fortunate to attract such strong candidates in our global search for a Women's National Team coach and are very pleased to announce Craig Parnham has accepted our offer to become head coach and lead the women's program through to Rio 2016," said Steve Locke, Executive Director, USA Field Hockey. "Craig is a brilliant choice and our search committee did a marvelous job."

As Assistant Coach, Parnham has been instrumental in the successes of Great Britain and England Hockey over the last several years. With his direction and leadership, England has had a remarkable run of podium finishes, including World Cup bronze in 2010, European bronze medals in 2009 and 2011 and bronze medals at the Champions Trophy and Commonwealth Games in 2010. The team rose in international world rankings from No. 11 in 2007 to No. 4 in 2012, culminating in a silver medal at the Champions Trophy in February 2012 and a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games.

In addition to being the Assistant Coach for the senior women, Parnham also served as the Head Coach of Great Britain's Under-21 Junior Women's Squad. Parnham led the junior team to a gold medal at the Australia Youth Olympic Festival in 2009 and a fourth place finish at the Junior World Cup in Boston, Massachusetts, the highest finish for England's U21 Team to date.

"I am very excited for Craig to begin working with our program and building on the foundation of the last eight years," said Keli Smith Puzo, two-time Olympian on the U.S. Women's Field Hockey Team. "Craig has a very impressive resume and his leadership with the Great Britain team as they climbed the world rankings, is a very admirable ingredient. With determined athletes awaiting his arrival, I am anxious to watch the team and cheer for them from afar."

Parnham represented England and Great Britain 115 times and competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games as well as the 2002 World Cup. Throughout his playing career, Parnham completed his coaching qualifications and coached at Bromsgrove School as First Team Coach and then became Director of Hockey. Upon his retirement following the 2004 Olympic Games, Parnham embarked on a career with the Scottish Hockey Union as High Performance Coach before taking on an Assistant Coaching role with England Hockey.

"Parnham has an impeccable resume and has achieved great success over the years with Great Britain and England Hockey," said Locke. "Our goal through to Rio 2016 is to develop across all areas of performance and to improve upon our finish at the 2012 Olympics  and we strongly feel Parnham is the right candidate to help us achieve those goals."

In 2009, Craig was selected to join the inaugural UK Sport Elite Coach Apprentice Programme from which he graduated in 2011. He has also completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Elite Coaching from the University of Central Lancashire.

The U.S. Women's National Team will return to the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California the end of January to begin training for World League Round 2 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, March 4-10. The goal of the tournament is to advance on to World League Round 3, which will put Team USA in a position to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.

USA Field Hockey will be announcing an interim coach to work with the U.S. Women's National Team during the transitional period of Parnham relocating to the United States.

SUPER SIXES LAST FOUR LINE UP KNOWN – a roundup of this weekend’s indoor action

Today saw the last weekend of play in the Maxifuel Super Sixes Premier Division and we now know the identity of the four teams that will go through to the Championship semi finals.
In the men's league, three of the usual suspects have finished in the top four - Reading, Beeston and East Grinstead. Bowdon could only finish fifth and their place has been taken by Canterbury, who completed the league in top place. Canterbury have seemingly come from nowhere, having finished in the top four and winning the Championships in 2007. However, their tenure in the Premier Division was lost in 2009 and they were out of the top flight until last season, when they narrowly avoided immediate relegation.
Although there was clear water between the top four and the remainder of the table, Championship holders East Grinstead will be disappointed with their fourth place finish. They drew three of their four matches over the weekend.
The last four go through to the semi finals, which will be held at Wembley along with the men's and women's finals on Sunday 27 January.
In the women's Premier Division the holders, Leicester, were runaway winners. Again, it was familiar teams that finished in the top four places - Leicester, Bowdon Hightown, Sutton Coldfied and Reading - all of whom qualified for the semi finals last year.  The fortunes of the top four were in contrast to the rest of the table. Possible relegation candidates, Slough, had better luck indoors than out, finishing sixth.
The women's semi finals are being held at Kettering next Saturday.
Division One of the men's and women's leagues started this weekend, with Holcombe leading the men's division, and East Grinstead and Harleston Magpies on equal points at the top of the women's.
Division Two in its North and South format only exists for one weekend before combining into the single division. Women's Division 2 will consist of Ipswich, Chelmsford, St Albans, Buckingham, Gloucester and Stourport. Men's Division 2 will consist of Cannock, Preston, Cheltenham, Bath Buccaneers, West Herts and Chelmsford. They will play their matches on the weekend of 19th/20th January.
