OLD LOUGHTS SLIP BEHIND IN EAST CONFERENCE RACE

The neck and neck race at the top of the Men's East Conference took an interesting turn this afternoon when leaders Old Loughtonians met Bromley & Beckenham who are languishing in eighth place.

Canterbury, who until yesterday morning shared 25 points with Old Loughtonians, won their match against Chelmsford 5-1. The match was played yesterday afternoon but the result came in too late to be included in yesterday's blog.

Old Loughtonians looked a cert to take the three points but Bromley & Beckenham put up an impressive display for a team so near the bottom of the table. Matthew Baggs opened the scoring for them after only six minutes but the sides went into the break honours even after Old Loughts' Adam Wheater evened the score. Old Loughts went briefly in front shortly after the game resumed, thanks to a James Stedman goal but it was a short lived lead. A Dalan Phillips hat trick, all scored in the space of six minutes, rocked the old boys and Bromley & Beckenham increased their lead to 5-2 ten minutes later.

The rain, which had nearly caused the match to be postponed, resumed in the second half, and it was clear that frustration was causing some increasingly X-rated tackling. Alex Jennings, James Kingstone and Adam Miller for Old Loughtonians were sent to the cooler, and a tackle on Old Loughts' Liam Doidge by Matthew Baggs saw Doidge leave the pitch with a ligament injury and Baggs consigned to the sin-bin. Indeed, the sin bin became so crowded on occasions that match official Ros Marsh was forced out of her shelter and had to stand in the rain.

A late fightback by Old Loughts saw Alex Jennings score twice, but the clock ran out on the home side and they finally lost the game 5-4. Canterbury now move ahead of them by three points.

IN THE MEN'S PREMIER DIVISION both Surbiton and Reading won their matches, despite international abstractions, but East Grinstead gave Brooklands MU only their second win of the season. Both East Grinstead's Danny Hall and Brookland's Aiden Khares received red cards in that match.

The match at Cannock between the home side and Beeston ended 4-3 in Beeston's favour but the score could have been different if it had not been for a Gareth Andrews' penalty stroke hitting the Beeston upright, whilst at the other end Chris Seddon had his stroke saved by David Kettle in the Cannock goal.
