Summary of today’s hockey in Delhi

England got off to an excellent start in their Commonwealth Games women's hockey tournament with a resounding win over Wales. Interestingly, all the goals in the match were scored by Great Britain players . A hat-trick of penalty corner conversions by Crista Cullen and a field goal by Charlotte Craddock was followed by Sarah Thomas who grabbed a last minute consolation goal for Wales. Final score 4-1 to England.

Our predictions as to the score in the Pool A match between Australia and Trinidad & Tobago fell slightly short, with the Australians only scoring 11. The scorers were Casey Eastham, Emily Hurtz (3), Madonna Blyth, Shelley Liddelow, Jessica Arrold, Megan Rivers (2), Jayde Taylor and Ashleigh Nelson. Final score in that match 11-0.

New Zealand lead Pool B after a 5-0 win over Malaysia, and South Africa occupy the top spot in Pool A after they beat Scotland 2-1. Scotland's scorer was Alison Bell from a penalty corner.

The men's tournament started today, with New Zealand winning 7-1 against Trinidad & Tobago in Pool B. Scotland were outclassed by Pakistan and lost their Pool A match 3-0, with the goals coming from Shakeel Abbasi, Rehan Butt and Muhammad Imran. Canada were beaten 4-1 by South Africa, with Gareth Carr opening the scoring from the penalty spot. India reversed a 2-1 lead by Malaysia to win their match 3-2.
