The honour of scoring the first goal in the Commonwealth Games hockey tournament went to New Zealand's Katie Glynn in the Pool B match against Wales in Delhi this morning. Clifton's Abi Welsford managed to pull one back for Wales just before half time, but goals from Gemma Flynn, Anna Thorpe (2) and Clarissa Eshuis, sank Wales' brief hopes of some points from this match.
Canada made a second half recovery in the other Pool B match played today, with a penalty stroke from Diana Roemer and a goal from open play by Anna Kozniuk. Their opponents, Malaysia, had taken a 3-0 lead courtesy of two goals by Norbani Hashim and a goal from Norfaraha Hashim. Final score, 3-2 to Malaysia.
Pool A saw the highest scoring match of the day, although the signs are that it will not be the highest scoring of the tournament. South Africa had gone 3-0 ahead at half time against Trinidad & Tobago, with a hat-trick of goals from Pietie Cotzee, but the second half saw a near collapse by the Trinidadians, as goal after goal was scored. On the scoresheet were Leslie-Ann George, Canterbury's Jenny Wilson (2), Dirkie Chamberlain (3), Kathleen Taylor and Farah Fredericks. Cotzee was back in the action with a fourth. In case you've lost count, that's twelve goals in total, for no reply. South Africa is not the strongest team in the pool and Trinidad & Tobago will be facing Australia in their next match.
Scotland made a brave effort to see off higher ranked India in the other Pool A match. A third minute shot from Holly Cram found space between the goalkeeper and the upright , which put Scotland in the lead until ten minutes into the second half. It was India's No 11, Jasjeet Kaur Handa, who equalised, with the match ending at 1-1.
