BIRMINGHAM AND LEICESTER STAY TOP

The top of the Women's Premier League remains unchanged as a result of University of Birmingham's 3-2 win over Brooklands, a match during which the University's Lorna Sissons received a red card. Leicester keep up their Championship bid by beating Reading 4-1 away, and they are in second place, separated from Birmingham University on goals scored. Reading must be hoping for the return of their internationals from Delhi as they have yet to pick up a point. Canterbury climb from sixth to third after a 4-1 win over Clifton, with the recently returned Hayley Brown finding the net in the dying seconds.

TalkHockeyRadio was at Kingston Grammar School to see newly promoted Surbiton take on Chelmsford. The Essex club was relegated from the Premiership two seasons ago and currently top the Women's Conference East. The venue was different to Surbiton's usual Sugden Road headquarters, as the club is having a new surface laid. On a damp and dismal day, Surbiton got off to a promising start, with goals from Emma Rowland-Jones and Jessica Brooker early in the second half, but the last ten minutes of the half saw first Kate Hales, and then Jess Ecott, score to put the two sides on parity as they went into half-time. Whether the rain dampened both sides' spirits is hard to say, but a goalless second half meant that the match ended at 2-2. Today's results mean that four teams are at the top of this conference, all on seven points – Chelmsford, Horsham, Surbiton and Sevenoaks.

The West Conference is an interesting example of how different the fortunes of teams new to the national league can be. Isca met the other new girls, Worcester, this afternoon, a match which ended 5-2 in Isca's favour. Isca are in second place behind Exe, separated by goal difference. Worcester stay rooted to the bottom on zero points.

Life is not to bright for Springfields UCLAN in the North Conference. They went down 5-0 to Sutton Coldfield, who retain second place behind Bradford Wakefield. Elsewhere in the North, the success currently being enjoyed by Beeston's men does not seem to have rubbed off on their women. They were beaten 4-2 at home by Loughborough Students, and have still to pick up a point after three games.
