PENALTIES END ENGLAND’S BRONZE DREAMS

England's men seemingly came back from the dead in the bronze medal match against New Zealand in Delhi this morning, with Simon Mantel finishing off a hat trick to draw the match in normal time. England had suffered an early setback when a stick tackle resulted in the award of a penalty stroke to New Zealand, which was converted by Dean Couzins. A second goal from Nick Haig gave the Kiwis a 2-0 advantage, which was pegged back by a Mantell goal late in the half.

England's woes increased when New Zealand were awarded a second stroke two minutes into the second half, but two goals from Mantell in the space of less than five minutes, helped by the absence of New Zealand's Steve Edwards in the sin bin, forced the game into extra time.

It was then to the dreaded penalty strokes. This time it was Adam Dixon who was unfortunate enough to have his stroke saved, and the stroke tally ended at 5-3 in New Zealand's favour. So the bronze medal goes to New Zealand and England return home empty handed.

The final between Australia and India finished 8-0 to the impressive Australians.
