READING WOMEN IN THE POINTS AT LAST

There must have been a sigh of relief at Reading this afternoon as their women's side earned their first points in five outings in the Premier Division. They left it late however, with all three goals in their win against Brooklands Poynton coming in the second half, courtesy of Elizabeth Hunt, Jo Ellis and Emma Thomas. Reading move off the bottom and will be hoping that the return of their internationals in the next few weeks will propel them further up the table.

Canterbury leap-frog Leicester to move into top spot after a useful 3-1 win away at Bowdon Hightown. Fay Nash opened the scoring for the home side early in the match, but first half penalty corner goals from Susie Rowe (2) and Lucy Hyams, gave the visitors the three points. Canterbury were aided in their bid to take the leading place by the failure of Leicester to overcome Olton & West Warwickshire. A 28th minute goal from Leicester's Rebecca Herbert was answered by Lucilla Wright within two minutes and the match ended 1-1.

At the top of the East Conference as Chelmsford could only draw at Sevenoaks. They are on 11 points with Surbiton, who came away from Horsham with maximum points, Emma Rowland-Jones scoring from the penalty spot with three minutes left on the clock, followed by a Helen Grant goal in open play. Final score there, 3-1 to Surbiton.

In the North, Bradford Wakefield is the only side in the Women's England Hockey League on maximum points. They beat Beeston 3-4 away. Beeston's defeat, and a draw at home by Spingfields UCLAN, means that Springfields move off the bottom to be replaced by Beeston.

The competition at the top of the West Conference consists of a recently promoted side, a newly promoted side and a newly relegated side. Buckingham and Isca are both on 11 points after both recorded victories this afternoon. They are being chased by Trojans, who were playing Premiership hockey until last season, who beat Staines 0-5 away this afternoon, with goals from Laura Nicholls, Caroline Thorne (2), Lizzie Gittens and Nadine Sommerville.
