ENGLAND UNABLE TO BREAK DOWN CANADIAN DEFENCE

All three of the home nations were in action in the Commonwealth Games today.

England men's campaign suffered a setback after they failed to take maximum points in their match against Canada. The Canadians, ranked 10th in the world, have proved to be a bit of a bogey team for England in the past, and so it was today. Iain Smythe scored to take an early lead for the Canadians and, despite a continuous onslaught by England in the second half, their defence held firm. It took 15 minutes of second half play before Simon Mantell was able to penetrate the Canadian defence. Final score, 1-1.

The other matches involving British teams were in the women's tournament and resulted in wins for both teams. Scotland managed to notch up six against Trinidad & Tobago, with a last minute consolation goal from Charlene Williams for T & B giving a 6-1 final result. Scotland's scorers were Linda Clement, Nikki Kidd (2), Alison Bell (2) and Holly Cram. A late second half penalty corner conversion by Claire Lowry gave Wales a 2-1 win in their match against Malaysia. Leah Wilkinson had opened the scoring with a penalty stroke but Nadia Abdul Rahman had equalised shortly after the half time restart.

In the other match today, Australia beat India 5-2 in men's Pool A.
