BEESTON AND ‘GRINSTEAD STAY AHEAD

Photo: Danny Hall shoots his first goal in the match against Canterbury (www.hockeyimages.co.uk)

Beeston and East Grinstead kept up their charge at the top of the men's Premiership this afternoon, and remain the only two teams in the division still on maximum points.

TalkHockeyRadio was at newly promoted Canterbury to see East Grinstead give the hosts a lesson in attacking hockey. Three early goals, courtesy of Danny Hall, recently returned Darren Cheeseman and Dave De Prez, threatened to produce a cricket score but, despite an early setback in the second half when Hall scored his second, Canterbury managed to gain some control and looked threatening for long periods. We were treated to a the usual superb play by Canterbury's play-coach Kwan Brown, whose presence on the pitch was a bit of a surprise (he flew out later today to join the Trinidad and Tobago team at the Commonwealth Games), but the home side were unable to break down their visitors' defence and the matched ended at 4-0 to EG.

Remarkably, Beeston and East Grinstead are sharing the top spot in the table (same points, goal difference and goals scored) after Beeston beat Loughborough Students 4-1 away.

There were a lot of goals in the East Conference, with the biggest being the 6-3 win of Bromley & Beckenham over Old Loughtonians. Indian Gymkhana are the only unbeaten team after their 4-3 win at home to Wimbledon.

In the North Doncaster are now two points ahead of the pack after a 4-0 win against Harborne. The match between newly promoted Olton & West Warwickshire and Ben Rydding ended 3-1 in Olton's favour.

University of Exeter and Bath Buccaneers lost their 100% records this afternoon, Exeter drawing at home to Havant, and Bath drawing 2-2 against Guildford. The University remain top on goal difference.

Photographs from the match between Canterbury and East Grinstead will appear on our www.hockeyimages.co.uk web site in the next day or two.
