POLES AND IRISH AWAIT THEIR FATE by Peter Savage in Terrassa

Day Two in Round 1.2 of the EuroHockey League has only one game involving an English side, when East Grinstead play Scotland's Kelburne in the last match this afternoon.

This morning we were treated to an interesting tussle between Ireland's Glenanne and Grunwald Poznan from Poland. Neither club can be considered as top-drawer European sides, but sharing a pool with Mannheimer, one of them will qualify for Round Two. For a long period of the match it looked as if it was going to be Glenanne, who took the lead in the 14th minute thanks to a Shane O'Donoghue goal, but the Poles managed to equalise early in the second half.

Michael McGuiness restored Glenanne's lead 11 minutes later, but Poznan's Tomasz Dutkiewicz scored from his second penalty corner strike of the game to finish the match a 2-2. Both sides will now have to wait until Gunwald Poznan play Mannheimer tomorrow to know their fate.

Tomorrow looks as if it will be billed 'Super Sunday', as all three English clubs will be in action against three of the top sides here. Beeston will face the host club, Atletic Terrassa, who play their first match this afternoon against Montrouge. Reading face the mighty Bloemendaal, who are also playing their first match today. The Dutch will be playing Stroitel Brest, who were soundly beaten by Reading yesterday. East Grinstead will play RC Polo de Barcelona, whose performance against Kelburne yesterday asked a lot of questions.

The result of the East Grinstead v Kelburne match will appear on this blog later.
