ENGLAND ROBBED OF DRAW IN CLOSING MINUTES by Peter Savage in Reading

Great Britain played the first of a two match series against the women from Argentina at Reading this evening. Argentina are on their way to play in the Champions Trophy in Monchengladbach. The game got off to a tentative start, with neither side appearing to wish to test the other, although GB had the balance of the penalty corners. Reaching the break at 0-0, the match came to life in the second half with a goal from Argentina’s Alesjandra Gulla. This seemed to spark GB into life, with a reply from a penalty corner nine minutes later off the stick of Mel Clewlow. Argentina restored their lead shortly after with a penalty corner strike – Gulla again the scorer. But GB were starting to play with increasing confidence and were threatening at corners. It was from a corner that GB scored their second, courtesy of Jo Ellis (Bowdon Hightown). It looked as if GB might hold Argentina to a draw but in the closing minutes GB were pegged back by a goal from Agustina Garcia. Final score 3-2 to Argentina. A creditable performance by GB against class opposition.

WOMEN’S EUROPEAN CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS IN COLOGNE

We have to apologise for publishing some incorrect information yesterday in relation to Leicester’s position in this competition. We were working from official sources, but it seems that these were wrong. Leicester finished third and not second in their pool and so played in the 3rd/4th place crossover against Sialuliai Gintra, winning the match 2-1. They finish in joint fifth place. The competition was won by the holders, Den Bosch, who beat Spanish side, Club de Campo 7-0 in the final.
