GB THROUGH TO FINALS OF YOUTH OLYMPICS

Tomorrow (Sunday) sees the second England Hockey indoor finals to be held at the National Indoor Arena at Birmingham. Women’s clubs Slough, Sutton Coldfield, Bowdon Hightown and Ipswich are through to the last four, as are East Grinstead, Reading, Loughborough Students, and Canterbury for the men. The women’s final will be at 17:40, followed by the men’s final at 19:00.

In the Youth Olympics in Australia Great Britain’s men completed the round-robin stage with a 2-1 victory over Malaysia. GB had gone 1-0 down just after the break and it was two goals in five minutes from Ashley Jackson, the first from a penalty stroke, which turned the game around. Final score 2-1 to GB. Laura Bartlett scored the only goal when the women took on New Zealand. Despite losing losing the match the women join the men in playing against their opposite numbers from Australia on Sunday.

The Champions’ Trophy comes to a conclusion this weekend, with only the Netherlands with a ticket booked for the final. The decider for the other place will rest on the outcome of the final round-robin match between Australia and Argentina today (Saturday). Argentina need a win or a draw to be playing the Dutch on Sunday. Their defeat would see Australia in the final. Fourth placed Germany are out of contention as a win against the Netherlands today could only hoist them to third place in the round-robin section.

Due to our presence at the NIA this Sunday, our results from the weekend may not appear on this blog until Monday.
