LETHARGIC READING TAKE TABLE DROP

It was all change in the Women's Premier League this afternoon as a series of results caused a seismic shift in the table.

TalkHockeyRadio was at Sonning Lane to see Reading play host to Clifton. Reading can claim to be at a disadvantage by virtue of their international players being rested post-Commonwealth Games, with Kate Walsh, Helen Richardson, Alex Danson and Beth Storry playing the role of spectators. But it is hard to explain the lethargy with which the players on the pitch took on the task of beating their opponents, who were one from bottom of the table this morning. Clifton seemed to be the keener of the two sides to win this game.

Clifton served early notice with a third minute goal from Carys Hopkins, and visitors carried the one goal lead into the second half. Clifton's second came from a midfield turnover which was latched on to by Georgie Twigg who, after a neat one-two, slotted the ball home into an empty net. Twigg, who had also been in Delhi, had opted to play and was one of the stars of the show. 2-0 was the final score and Clifton move up seventh place, to be replaced by Reading. Photographs from this match will be on our sister web site at www.HockeyImages.co.uk tomorrow (Sunday).

The top of the table took a dramatic change in complexion after Canterbury beat Leicester 1-0, the goal coming from the recently returned Hayley Brown. Slough's 1-0 win over University of Birmingham propels them two places to top the table, with Canterbury in second place. Leicester drop to third and University of Birmingham to fourth.

In the East Conference, Surbiton look more and more like prospects for the end of season play-offs with a 5-2 win over Cambridge City. Among the other contenders, Ipswich and Chelmsford met each other, with Ipswich winning 2-1, with the result that Chelmsford surrender their lead to Surbiton.

There were some high scoring matches in the North Conference, of which the University of Durham were the greatest beneficiaries. Their 7-0 win over Aldridge promotes them to second place in the table, two points behind leaders Sutton Coldfield.

In the West it was a good day for the leaders, with Buckingham beating Firebrands 6-0, and Isca beating Swansea 5-3. Both are on 17 points, but Buckingham has by far the better goal difference.
