EAST GRINSTEAD AND BEESTON WIDEN THE GAP. Results from today’s England Hockey League matches.

The gap between the top two teams and the rest of the pack in the men's Premiership is getting quite sizeable and it was made even greater this afternoon when East Grinstead visited Surbiton. A hat-trick from Ashley Jackson, all scored from open play, contributed to 'Grinstead's 5-1 win. They are now ten points ahead of third place Bowdon, who lost 1-2 to visiting Beeston. Beeston are now the only side that could overtake East Grinstead before Christmas, although on present form that seems unlikely.

Reading's 3-0 win over Hampstead & Westminster promotes Reading two places to fifth. The two Premier Division strugglers, Cannock and Canterbury came away from their match honours even, Canterbury's Liam Foster stealing the draw in the last two minutes. Canterbury and Cannock remain anchored at the bottom of the table. It was a similar story at Loughborough Students where they played host to Brooklands MU. A 70th minute goal by Students' James Osborn stopped the Manchester side from going away with three points, and the sides keep their sixth and eighth places in the table.

In the conferences, Southgate retain their place at the top of the East table after a useful win over St Albans. Indian Gymkhana are promoted from fourth to second after a 4-3 win over Oxted. They replace Holcombe, who could only draw 1-1 against Wimbledon in an evening game yesterday. Holcombe move down to fourth and Wimbledon to fifth.

In the North Conference, Doncaster replace University of Durham at the top of the table after Doncaster beat Barford Tigers 6-1 and students went down 3-2 to Deeside Ramblers. Ben Rhydding's 2-1 win over Belper failed to lift them off the bottom of the table but it helps their survival chances. Belper's James Blackwell received a red card during this match.

In the West Conference, Bath Buccaneers and University of Exeter moved further ahead of the pack with a 7-3 win by the University over Bournville and a 5-2 win for the Buccaneers over Whitchurch. Guildford slipped back in the race when they could only draw 1-1 at home to Stourport.
