HIGHTOWN WIN HELPS CANTERBURY TO THE TOP

Bowdon Hightown's 0-1 win away at Slough this afternoon enabled Canterbury to retake the lead in the Women's Premier Division, a lead which they surrendered two weeks ago. Canterbury were on top form against their opponents, Cannock, who played well enough, but had no answer to a side who are clearly firing on all cylinders at the moment. First half goals by Lucy Hyams and Sarah Kerly – the latter of famous father fame – put Canterbury ahead in the first half, with Linda Royston scoring Cannock's only goal just before the break. But the serious damage was done from penalty corners in the closing stages of the game, with Rebecca Weston, Natalie Seymour and Mel Clewlow, all finding the back of the net. Some people accuse women's hockey of being boring. Perhaps this match was the exception that proves the rule?

Reading seem unable to pull themselves out of the doldrums and this afternoon they went down 2-1 at University of Birmingham. Leicester looked as if they were going to come away from Clifton with one point, but Emma Clarke scored for them in the last ten minutes, and they move up to second place behind Canterbury. Brooklands Poynton won their first match of the season by beating Olton & West Warwicks 3-2.

In the East Conference, Surbiton's promotion hopes took a slight knock when they could only draw against close rivals Ipswich. They still lead the table but are being pressed hard by both Ipswich and Chelmsford. Luckless Dereham is one of only two sides in the Women's England Hockey League without a point, as they went down 4-1 to Harleston Magpies.

The other side without a point are West Conference Worcester, who went down 3-1 to Firebrands. Buckingham lead the table, their two point lead helped by a 1-1 draw between Isca and Trojans.

In the top of the table clash in the North Conference, Loughborough Students go to the top of the table after a 3-1 win over Sutton Coldfield. University of Durham slump from second to fourth after drawing at home to Wakefield Bradford.
