H&W MOVE BACK UP THE TABLE Today’s results from the England Hockey League

With a late result still to come in from Canterbury against Loughborough Students, there is virtually no change in the England Hockey League Premiership table.

The biggest beneficiaries from this afternoon's matches was Hampstead and Westminster. They beat Surbiton 3-1 in an all-London derby, with goals from Jaime Gonzalez-Laguillo Garcia, Ian Roberts and Dan Fox. It would have been four but Adrian Palmer hit the post with his 33rd minute penalty stroke. H&W move back up the table from seventh to fourth.

East Grinstead maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League after a 7-1 win over Cannock and Beeston managed to earn three points when they beat Reading at home.

TalkHockeyRadio was at Holcombe Park this afternoon to watch two East Conference sides that are potential candidates for the promotion play-offs. Holcombe were quick out of the blocks against Indian Gymkhana, with new boy Harry Jawanda harrying the visitors' defence in the opening seconds. But, despite dominating the match, it took Holcombe all of 32 minutes to find the net, courtesy of James Kitcherside. There was no such delay in the second half, with Jonty Griffiths scoring within two minutes. The final score, 2-0, was slightly flattering to Gymkhana, who were under the cosh for most of the match, but some resolute defending kept the score to reasonable proportions. Unfortunately we have to report that Gymkhana's discipline, often a problem in the past, let them down, with two green cards and three yellows being shown, culminating in a red card being shown to former Holcombe player and Canadian international Ranjeev Deol for a comment made to umpire Sean Edwards. In the interests of balance, Holcombe received one green and one yellow.

Holcombe's victory temporarily put them at the top of the East Conference table, but a late result from Southgate means that Southgate retain their lead at the top after a 6-1 win against Bromley and Beckenham. There were some other high scoring matches in the East this afternoon, with Harleston Magpies putting ten past Sevenoaks for no reply. Old Loughtonians won 5-1 against new boys Wimbledon.

In the North Conference there were also some high scoring matches, most noticeably the 7-1 win of Sheffield Hallam over struggling new boys Ben Rhydding. Leek move up to top position after beating Barford Tigers 5-3, whilst this morning's leaders, Doncaster, were deposed after they were beaten 4-3 by Deeside Ramblers.

Leaders in the West Conference, Bath Buccaneers play second placed University of Exeter tomorrow. The chasing clubs were unable to make hay in their absence with Guildford and Havant only managing a 1-1 draw. Guildford, in third place, are seven points behind the leaders. Fareham discovered yet again what a good signing George Harris was, when he saved a 52nd minute penalty stroke from Birmingham Uni's Peter Jackson, unfortunately it did not stop his side going down 4-1.
