OXFORD IN VARSITY DOUBLE

Oxford made it the third double in a row when they walked off with both the men's and women's cups in the annual Varsity Match at the Southgate Hockey Centre this afternoon.

Although the Oxford women claimed the cup, it was only by default. A 46th minute penalty corner conversion by Cambridge's Kirsty Elder cancelled out Sara Ffrench-Constant's first half goal for Oxford. The final score of 1-1 means that Oxford retain the cup.

The men's result was far more emphatic, with Oxford going into the break at 4-1 thanks to goals from Adam Jordan (2), Alexander Stobbart and Alexander Evans. Cambridge's only goal came from the penalty spot, converted by Stuart Jackson.

Cambridge managed to halt the slide in the second half and a last gasp revival looked on the cards when Jackson scored his second, this time from a penalty corner. But celebrations were short lived when Evans scored Oxford's fifth with only three minutes left on the clock.

Final score 5-2 to Oxford.
