Although not all the results are in from today's England Hockey League matches, a number of issues were settled this afternoon.
A 6-3 win by East Grinstead over Cannock means that EG are now uncatchable and will finish the season in top spot in the men's Premiership. There only potential rivals this morning, Beeston, lost 2-1 away at Reading, leaving an eight point margin between them and East Grinstead.
Canterbury kept alive their slim chances of surviving in the Premier Division with only their second win of the season when they played Loughborough Students. Brooklands MU are only two points above them in the play-off slot after they lost their local derby match against neighbours Bowdon. The two bottom sides play each other next weekend, with the winner going into the play-offs and the loser facing automatic relegation.
In the East Conference, Southgate are promoted after a 2-5 away win against Bromley and Beckenham. At the basement end of the table Sevenoaks' look set for relegation. They lost 1-5 at home to Magpies. Although they are only three points adrift at the bottom of the table, their goal difference would suggest that survival is impossible. St Albans are now four points behind Wimbledon and will be in the relegation play-offs unless Sevenoaks perform a miracle and push them into bottom place.
In the North Conference it's still neck and neck between the University of Durham and Sheffield Hallam Civica. Sheffield did themselves no harm this afternoon when they boosted their goal difference with a 12-0 win over relegated Ben Rhydding. Durham Uni won their match against Olton & West Warwicks by a more modest 2-1. The relegation play-off place in this Conference is currently occupied by Barford Tigers, who were beaten 0-2 at home by Leek. Harborne are one point above them and next weekend's fixtures may provide the Tigers with a get uut of gaol card. They play relegated Ben Rhydding, whilst Harborne have to face University of Durham.
In the West there are a number of crucial matches which are still to be played, including the top of the table clash between Bath Buccs and University of Exeter which is scheduled for tomorrow.
There are a number of results still to come in and these will be posted on this blog later today.
