USA AND ANTILLES RETAIN THEIR LEAD

It is looking intriguingly likely that the second Women’s Olympic Qualifier, being held in Kazan (Russia), could result in a showdown between the mighty USA and a group of small islands off the coast of Venezuela. Two teams remain on maximum points after three matches and they meet each other in the final game of the round-robin stage on Saturday. The Netherlands Antilles won their match against Russia today, 3-1, whilst the USA overcame France 7-0. Both teams are on maximum points (9) but the USA have much the better goal difference, having scored 14 times in the last two matches. Tomorrow (Wednesday) in a rest day and play resumes on Thursday with the USA playing India and the Netherlands Antilles playing third-placed Belgium. Belgium and the Netherlands Antilles met each other three times during 2007 with the balance of the matches going 2-1 in favour of the Antilles.
