SLOUGH ON TOP AT EASTLEIGH BUT GB GO DOWN IN ARGENTINA

PHOTO: Reading's Harry Jawanda takes an unconventional route to the circle during Reading's match against Harleston Magpies.

Slough's distinguished history as one of England's top indoor teams continues as they emerged as the only unbeaten side after the first weekend of the Women's Indoor England Hockey League at Flemming Park, Eastleigh. They saw off Indoor Cup holders Bowdon Hightown 7-3 before going on to secure an 8-3 win against Clifton. As yesterday, Jane Smith was Slough's top scorer with six goals to her name.

Slough are being chased by Leicester and Canterbury, both on nine points. Leicester, who were on maximum points this morning, slipped up against Ipswich, whose Millie McWhirter scored a hat trick to help them secure a 4-3 win.

IN THE MEN'S PREMIER DIVISION, also at Flemming Park, East Grinstead put St Albans under the cosh, when they beat their old rivals from Crystal Palace days 16-1. It was a high scoring day for 'Grinstead, who earlier had beaten Old Loughtonians 11-5, with Dave De Prez accounting for six of their goals.

East Grinstead are on maximum points, along with Loughborough Students in second place. The Students started the day with a close 4-3 win over Beeston, followed by a 7-3 win over Havant.

The league resumes at the same location on 9th/10th January 2010. The top four sides from each of the two Premier Divisions go through to the national finals in Nottingham at the end of that month.

Great Britain's women started their FIVE TEST SERIES AGAINST ARGENTINA with a disappointing result, with Becky Herbert scoring the only English goal in their 5-1 defeat against the hosts.
