England Women are in a strong position after their second match when they beat Germany 2-0. It was their fifth successive victory against Germany. “Yesterday we misfired, today we were disciplined and diligent,” said Danny Kerry, their delighted coach.
With Kate Walsh and Laura Unsworth in outstanding form, the defence denied the Germans any significant penetration, and with Helen Richardson sparkling in midfield England’s victory was as fully deserved as the 7-1 penalty corner count would suggest.
Crista Cullen gave England the lead mid-way through the first half driving in a rebound from Walsh’s initial corner shot. It was Cullen who struck again early in the second half, flicking a penalty corner high behind Kristina Reynolds.
The Netherlands, England Men’s next opponents, had an emphatic 8-1 victory against the French, with Floris Evers (their captain) scoring a hat trick in open play.
England’s Men play The Netherlands tomorrow evening (Monday 22nd) at 1900 (CET+1).
