DUTCH WOMEN IN SHOCK DEFEAT by Peter Colwill at the Gant EuroHockey Championships at Monchengladbach

Yesterday (Sunday 21st) Spain's Women caused the first shock of the tournament beating The Netherlands 1-0. Barbara Malda converted a penalty corner in the sixth minute, and from then on it was one way traffic with the Dutch setting up camp in the Spanish half. Maartje Paumen hit the bar from a penalty corner and Maria Lopez de Equilaz made two marvellous saves to deny two other Paumen flicks.

Ireland's Women are out of the tournament after losing 3-0 to Belgium, but are still playing for a place in an Olympic Qualifier.
