Some excellent play by East Grinstead and an extraordinary piece of good luck, has resulted in the English team snatching the EuroHockey Indoor Clubs Trophy this afternoon.
The excellent play came in their final match, against AHTC Wien, a game which East Grinstead had to win in order to further their hopes of promotion. In front of a partisan home crowd they dominated the game from the start, eventually running out as 5-0 winners. This assured them of at least a second place finish but in a surprising turn of events the Ukrainians from Kolos-Sekvoya overcame Menzieshill 5-3 and robbed the Scots of the Trophy.
The day's events were slightly marred by events at the end of the relegation pool match between Partille of Sweden and Racing Club de Bruxelles. The Belgians, who had provided some of the most entertaining hockey of the weekend, completely went to pieces when their Thibaut Cornillie received a red card in the last seconds of the match. Spectators came onto the pitch and jostled umpires and even myself. Cornille was suspended for one match by the TD and a report is going to the EHF regarding the incident.
Due to restricted Internet access this report has been abbreviated but full details will appear in the March edition of our on-line magazine, HockeyTalk, due out on Thursday.
LEAGUE TABLES FROM THE ENGLAND HOCKEY LEAGUE MAY BE DELAYED UNTIL MONDAY.
