England lost their second Pool A match in the Women’s World
League in Argentina in the cruellest of ways.
Playing the World number one side, The Netherlands, they
went behind to an early penalty corner conversion by Maartje Paumen. However,
England got back into the match with an equaliser just before the break from
Georgie Twigg. With the gift of an own goal from the Dutch four minutes into
the second half, England took the lead which they tenaciously hung on to until
the 67th minute, when Paumen equalised for the Dutch, again from a
penalty corner.
With the match looking as if it was going to end in a draw,
the ball was hardly back in play after Paumeng goal when Kitty Van Male scored
the third goal for the Dutch. The match
ended less than two minutes later with the score 3-2 to The Netherlands.
England meet Germany on Tuesday. Despite the defeat, England
must be buoyed up by the knowledge that they led the Dutch for almost the
entire second half and achieved a better result than the German’s had the
previous day.
