BEESTON AND ‘GRINSTEAD ON MAX POINTS

The was action in both the men's and women's England Hockey League this afternoon.

Two games into the season and only two sides from the men's Premiership are on maximum points. Beeston pushed Cannock to the bottom on the table with a 3-0 win at home, and themselves take pole position. East Grinstead also took the points when they played host to Brooklands, winning 3-0.

New boys Canterbury were deprived of their second win by a late equaliser by Hampstead's Andrew Smith, the match ending at 2-2. Reading are in the unusual position of having not yet recorded a win, going down 2-3 to visitors Loughborough Students – an overtime penalty corner by Simon Faulkner doing the damage there.

It is a similar story in the Women's Premier Division, with University of Birmingham and Leicester both on six points. Leicester saw off Bowdon Hightown 2-1, whilst the students crushed Olton & West Warwicks 6-1. Sophie Bray accounted for four of the university's goals. New girls Cannock should be pleased with their 5-3 win over Reading, which puts them in fourth place.

Belper in the Men's Conference North put seven past Barford Tigers for a reply of only one, but Doncaster are top of this table by virtue of being the only side on maximum points.

New girls in the Women's East Conference are enjoying mixed fortunes, with Surbiton recording their second win by beating Harleston Magpies 2-0 away. Dereham remain fixed at the bottom of the table after losing 0-6 to Horsham.
