BEESTON GO DOWN AT HAMPSTEAD & WESTMINSTER. Today's League and Cup results

It has been a difficult weekend for England’s top men’s clubs. First we had the defeat of East Grinstead at home to Reading last night and today’s sole Premier Division game ended in a victory for Hampstead & Westminster after a late winner by Will Naylor in their match against last season’s Champions, Beeston.  This leaves a surprising situation where last season’s strugglers, Cannock, remain at the top of the table with the division’s only 100% record.

There was a full programme of matches in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Conferences this afternoon and TalkHockeyRadio went to the match between East Conference Horsham and Old Loughtonians. Until this afternoon, neither side had recorded a win.  Perhaps we’ve spent too much time watching international hockey over the last few weeks but you were reminded that this is the basement end of the division by a spectator taking a shortcut across the pitch whilst the game was in progress and by the presence of two goals at either end of the pitch!  Of course, only one was occupying the back line but the others were close enough to produce some confusing photographs.  Although Horsham seemed to enjoy the greater percentage of the possession, and came back from an early reverse to equalise in the 33rd minute, there was an evident bankruptcy in the penalty corner department. This is where Old Loughtonians had the upper hand, and two conversions from Emily Defroand gave them a 3-1 win.

Old Loughts move up the table into fourth place, whilst Horsham are one of two teams without a point in the East Conference.  At the other end of the table things are looking interesting with three sides, Ipswich, St Albans and Surbiton, all on maximum points. This deadlock will be broken next weekend when St Albans play Surbiton.

Bill Colwill was at Stowe School to see Buckingham entertain Trojans and he has sent us this this report:

There cannot be many more attractive venues to watch a hockey match on a hot October afternoon than in the grounds of Stowe School - side by side artificial pitches - where Buckingham defended their top spot in the Ivestec Women’s West Conference League when they entertained Trojans.  The visitors  were off to a splendid start with a fourth minute penalty corner goal from Nyssa Cole and then eight minutes later went further ahead in open play through Laura Nicholls.  With the shell shocked home supporters beginning to find the voices and Lauren Thomas getting a grip on the midfield Buckingham fought back with Sam Sandham scoring the first of her two goals after 17 minutes.  When Sandham scored her second three minutes after the interval the home side were beginning to take advantage of a tiring and disorganised Trojans.  Then Thomas with a stinging penalty corner put Buckingham in to the lead from which they never looked back.  Lorraine Campbell and Katrina Nicholson  iced the cake with field goals for a final 5-2 scoreline to keep their team ahead of Barnes Hounslow Ealing on points at the top of the Division.

Just as we were thinking that the name Whitley Bay & Tynemouth was a curse, (they hold their North Conference status by virtue of an amalgamation with Sunderland after a club of the same name was relegated a few seasons back) they put six past Springfields to move up to seventh.  With no club left with a 100% record, it’s a very open division. In the West, Team Bath Buccaneers are having a difficult start to their season having suffered their third defeat, this time a 6-1 reverse at the hands of Swansea. Trojans and Staines also had difficult matches, losing 5-2 and 5-0 to Buckingham and Isca repectively.

Round 1 of the Men’s Cup was played today. There do tend to be some high scoring matches in the first round, but Belper’s 19-0 win over Leamington was put in the shade by the 26-0 win of Deeside Ramblers over University of Salford. At least they turned up.  There were walkovers for Chichester over Eastbourne and Timperley over Urmston. There were two Premier Division sides in Round 1 – Bowdon, who beat Sheffield University Bankers 7-0, and Southgate, who overcame Banbury 5-2. They must be putting something in the water down in Sussex at the moment because two Sussex sides beat England Hockey League opponents, Lewes beating Indian Gym 3-1, and Brighton & Hove beating Oxted 3-2.
