CLIFTON TAKE TOP SPOT ON OPENING DAY OF INVESTEC LEAGUE

They may have been old friends re-united, but Bowdon's Tina Cullen did not let sentiment stand in her way as she scored a hat trick in her side's 4-1 win over newly promoted Sutton Coldfield on the opening day of the Investec Women's Premier League. The result of the meeting between two of the league's evergreen players, Bowdon Hightown's Cullen and Sutton Coldfield's Jane Sixsmith, means that Bowdon start the season in second place, behind Clifton on goal difference. Clifton, despite the loss of some key players, managed an impressive win over the champions, Leicester, whose ranks would have been depleted by not having their England players available.

There was a a bit of a goal draught in the East Conference, where only 10 goals were scored in total, making it difficult to predict who potential front runners might be. There was no such draught in the North Conference however, with University of Durham reigniting their promotion bid with a 7-0 win over Northampton Saints. Whitley Bay and Tynemouth, who are an amalgamation of the club of the same name and North regulars Sunderland, will be disappointed with their 2-1 defeat at Beeston, whilst relegated Brooklands Poynton also got off to a disappointing start by losing to visiting Doncaster.

There was no shortage of goals in the West either, with last season's unsuccessful promotion candidates Buckingham recording a 4-1 win at Swansea.
