SURBITON’S HOPES FADE

Picture: Havant's Mohamed Ezz (in green) in action in the match between Havant and Whitchurch.

Surbiton's hopes of overtaking leaders Reading were ebbing away this afternoon as they suffered their second defeat in succession and opened up a four point gap between the sides. Playing host to East Grinstead in the Men's Premiership, the absence of many of their players on England duties showed in the second half. After Tim Pinnock made an early response to Ben Payne's 18th minute goal, it was all downhill for Surbiton in the second half, with goals from Mark Pearn, Dave de Prez and Gareth Carr. Final score: 4-1 to East Grinstead.

Meanwhile, Reading proved again that they are still a robust side, even with their internationals missing. Reading had taken a 2-0 lead into the second half, courtesy of Felix Froeschle and Jonny Codling, but Andrew Monte and Stephen Wood scored for Beeston within the first five minutes of the half. Harry Jawanda restored Reading's lead shortly afterwards and the match ended 3-2.

Exeter University's recent winning streak lasted for one game only, as they succumbed 1-0 to Hampstead and Westminster at Paddington Rec. The other bottom side, Brooklands MU, had better fortune when they beat visiting Loughborough Students 3-0. Brooklands now have a real prospect of moving out of the play-off place if they can score a few more points.

Cannock are in real danger of missing out on a European play-off slot. They could only manage a 2-2 draw against Bowdon, who are now only one point behind them.

TalkHockeyRadio was at Havant to see how one of the Welsh teams in the England Hockey League, Whitchurch, could perform. Bath Buccaneers are running away with the West Conference although, in theory, Whitchurch is one of the few clubs that could catch them. On this afternoon's performance they would seem to have little chance. They started gamely enough and well deserved their early lead off the stick of Alex Keating, but as they game progressed them seemed to have nothing in the tank, either in the way of ideas or ambition. Ezz equalised for Havant shortly before the half-time whistle and for the remainder of the game Havant were virtually parked in the Whitchurch 25. Final score 1-1.

In the East Conference Old Loughtonians overtook Canterbury at the top of the table by virtue 2-1 win over their rivals. Both sides are on 31 points with Old Loughtonians having the better goal difference.

In the North, Deeside Ramblers stay well ahead of the pack after a 5-0 win at home to Doncaster.
