SURBITON NEW LEAGUE LEADERS

Surbiton went top of the Men's Premier Division this afternoon after recording a win against new boys, Exeter University.

It was one of their recent imports from Spanish side Club de Campo that started the ball rolling with an eighth minute goal, with skipper Tim Pinnock (pictured) recording a second four minutes later. The home crowd were expecting more goals from their star-studded side and Surbiton stepped up the pressure in the second half. Ironically, so did the University.

The home side edged ahead with a second from Valazquez and a goal from Ben Hawes, but the students were clearly not overawed by their opponents and had several goal scoring opportunities. Eventually Ben Edge took advantage of a defensive lapse to pull one back. A goal from Surbiton's Joseph Middleton opened up the home side's lead to 5-1 but Exeter were still exerting their own pressure, winning a penalty stroke in the 55th minute, which Surbiton's 'keeper Chris Bristow saved. Despite Matt Daly making Surbiton's tally six, Exeter kept on playing and managed to score their second with six minutes left courtesy of James Grannell.

Whilst Surbiton were demonstrably the better of the two sides, on this performance the University may be a better side that we first thought. They were certainly not phased at being on the same pitch with a team that contained five gold medal winners from Amsterdam and it may be that they can pick up points from less illustrious sides before Christmas.

Surbiton are one of only two sides in the Premiership with a 100% record, the other being Reading, who recorded a 5-2 win against this morning table toppers East Grinstead. Beeston managed their first win, against Brooklands, whilst Cannock did the same against Loughborough Students.

Notable amongst the Conferences was newly promoted Deeside Ramblers, who recorded their third win of the season in their 5-1 win over Leek. They lead the table with a three point margin.
