WALTON MOVE MOVES WAKEFIELD TO TOP. A round-up of matches in the Investec Women's League

Bottom placed Olton & West Warwicks had further pain inflicted on them this afternoon in the Investec Women’s Premiership.  Entertaining second placed Canterbury, they shipped nine goals for no reply with Scottish international Nikki Kidd contributing four of the nine.

Despite improving their goal difference, Canterbury remain in second place.  Reading came from behind to beat Leicester 3-2 at Sonning Lane, leaving both Reading and Canterbury on 19 points.  Reading’s 0-12 win over Olton on 21 September may be what now separates the sides goal difference.  Leicester’s recent improvement in form took a knock, with them slipping down from fifth to seventh.

Clifton, who were in fourth place this morning, move up to third after a relatively modest 2-1 win at home to Sutton Coldfield.  Their move was, in part, as a result of Surbiton’s 4-0 defeat of Bowdon Hightown.  Surbiton move from sixth to fourth place, whilst Bowdon go in the opposite direction to fifth.

Beeston, who have had a very mixed season to date, earned three points at the expense of University of Birmingham. Their 2-3 away win moves them up one place to sixth, whilst the University remains in eight, three points clear of Sutton Coldfield and six points clear of Olton.

GB international Sally Walton only moved from Bowdon Hightown to Wakefield five days ago, but her arrival has had an immediate effect on her side’s fortunes. This morning University of Durham were two points clear of Wakefield in the Conference North but, thanks to two goals from Walton when the two sides met this afternoon, Wakefield has leap-frogged the University into first place.  Score there 1-2.   Durham’s defeat also enabled Brooklands Poynton to move into second place after their 2-3 win at Loughborough Students.

In the Conference East the gap between the leaders Holcombe and second placed East Grinstead has opened up to seven points. Holcombe came away from Old Loughtonians with a 0-4 win thanks to penalty corner goals from Megan Frazer, Julia Cass and Laura Unsworth, and field goal from Nicci Daly.  In the all-Sussex clash there was a surprise defeat for East Grinstead, who lost 4-2 to ninth placed Horsham. Definitely a game of two halves there, with East Grinstead going into the second half with a 2-0 lead. Chelmsford continue to struggle at the bottom on three points after losing 1-2 to Sevenoaks.

Buckingham managed to shake off their two consecutive defeats in the Conference West by beating Isca 2-0 at home. But they remain three points adrift of the leaders, Slough, who recorded their seventh win of the season by beating Exe 0-5 away, with GB international Ashleigh Ball scoring a hat-trick.
