BUCKINGHAM LOSE REMARKABLE RECORD. A round-up of today's Matches in the Investec Women's League

Is it a record?  A match in today’s Investec Women’s League programme that caught our eye was the fixture between Buckingham and relegated Slough in the Conference West.  Leanne Ryan may have made history because her goal for Slough resulted in the match ending 0-1, and we reckon that this is Buckingham’s first league defeat since 6 February 2011.  If it’s not a record, it’s still a remarkable achievement.  The outcome means that the two sides are both on 15 points at the top of the table, with Buckingham having a much better goal difference.

TalkHockeyRadio was at Sugden Road for the match between Premier Division sides Surbiton and University of Birmingham.  Despite their relatively lowly position, we had heard reports that the students were playing great hockey, evidenced by them spoiling Canterbury’s 100% record last weekend. And they played well today, although the gods (and the weather) were clearly not on their side, and the 3-1 win to Surbiton will be a disappointing result for some excellent hockey. Surbiton move up two places to a more respectable third in the table.

Birmingham University stay in eighth place, and are probably going to be spared relegation worries by the Premier Division’s two under-achievers, Sutton Coldfield and Olton & West Warwicks. Olton went down 0-5 at home to Beeston, whilst Sutton lost 6-0 away at Reading. Olton are stuck at the bottom of the table with zero points and an X rated goal difference (-42).

Reading’s win against Sutton Coldfield pulls them two points clear of second placed Canterbury, who could only draw 2-2 away at Leicester. Canterbury had led for much of the match but were denied the maximum points by a late penalty corner conversion by Hannah Fair. Leicester remain in unfamiliar territory for them, sinking one place to seventh.

Leicester seem to have become draw specialists – this was the third this season – a distinction they share with Clifton.  Clifton had taken a 1-2 lead away at Bowdon Hightown, but had it snatched away in the 50th minute by a Natalie Wray goal.  Final score 2-2 and Bowdon drop to fifth, whilst Clifton take their place in fourth.

In the Conference East, Holcombe keep up their six point lead with a 1-5 win at Horsham. Horsham drop into ninth place, one above struggling Chelmsford, who lost 1-2 in the East Anglia derby against Ipswich. Ipswich move up from ninth to seventh.

In the Conference North, University of Durham are the team to beat, although beating them seems to be the problem. They keep their 100% record with 2-4 win over Ben Rhydding. Boots lost their sixth game of the season, and are on zero points after a bruising visit from Stourport. The final score, 1-7 to Stourport.
