OXFORD BAGS UNIVERSITY DOUBLE
The 109th Varsity match was held at the Southgate Hockey Centre this afternoon with the dark blues recording victories in both the men's and women's games.
Cambridge have only won the women's title once since 2000 but it looked as if nine years of bad luck was about to change when Jenny Stevens scored for Cambridge in under two minutes of play. Spurred into action, Oxford were immediately on the attack, although it was end-to-end stuff until Helen Macadam equalised 12 minutes later. Seven minutes into the second half the dark blues skipper, Charlotte Jackson, found the net from a penalty corner. Final score 2-1 to Oxford.
Cambridge were quickly on the attack in the men's game too. Jack Yelland scored in open play early in the first half but the game remained finely balanced until the second period. John Fedderson opened Oxford's account five minutes into the half and it looked as if the match could be played out to an uninspiring draw. The drizzle and chilly wind that had kept much of the crowd in the clubhouse started to get more biting as the evening drew in, but as the match moved towards its conclusion things started to heat up on the pitch. Thomas Lockton put Oxford ahead and in the last ten minutes Alex Evans found the net, followed by John Fedderson scoring his second. Final score 4-1 to Oxford putting an end to a run of two wins by Cambridge in the men's Varsity match.
