DOUBLE JOY FOR READING. From Peter Colwill at Sonning Lane, Reading.

While nearly all of the National League teams were having a restful Sunday, having played the day before, Reading hosted a double header with their men, sponsored by YouLink HR, beating Beeston 2-1 and their women triumphing 1-0 against Slough. Whether the spectators, who were charged £8 on the gate (cheaper on line), received value for money was debatable.

Reading men fielded all their England internationals except Iain Mackay and Nick Brothers. Two first half goals within a minute scored by Andy Watts and Jonty Clarke looked to have set them on the way to a comfortable victory but Beeston struck back quickly with captain Adam Dixon converting a penalty corner and Reading squandered six penalty corners, George Pinner saving five of them. In the last three minutes Dixon had two opportunities to equalise but Jamie Legg denied him saving in open play and with a spectacular dive at a penalty corner.

The Ladies match was a drab affair. Rebecca Halle scored the only goal ten minutes from time for Reading who were missing their England players who are due to return next week. The biggest talking point was the numbers worn by Reading. Twelve players had different numbers from the programme. The excuse was that their new Adidas kit had only arrived a day previously. Work that out. At least the names were right. Slough's Kat McGonigle was not only played wearing a shirt with goalkeeper Kate Filochowski's number, but also her name. This cannot be the way to promote hockey.

Investec League Results

There was one Investec League match today, between Reading and Slough. This looked destined to become a no score bore but was rescued by a late penalty corner conversion by Rebecca Halle. The 1-0 result propels Reading into second place behind Clifton on goal difference.

Photos from this match will appear on our www.HockeyImages.co.uk site tomorrow.

Today’s men’s England Hockey League results

There were two matches in the Men's Premier Division this afternoon. Beeston failed to grab their chances to climb to the top of the table in a close encounter with Reading. Two goals in the space of two minutes stunned Beeston late in the first half, the first from Andy Watts and the second from Jonty Clark, and although Adam Dixon was able to respond from a penalty corner shortly afterwards, the score was resolutely stuck on 2-1 until the end of the match. The win moves Reading into 5th place, one place behind Beeston.

Photographs from this match will appear on our photos web site, www.HockeyImages.co.uk, tomorrow (Monday).

Indian Gymkhana were unable to build on their win last weekend, and went down 2-0 when they visited Holcombe in their East Conference match.

Results from the Women's Investec League will follow shortly.

CANNOCK WIN PUTS THEM SECOND. Round up of results, and tables for Men’s England Hockey League

Anyone who was predicting the demise of Cannock would need to look at this afternoon's Premier Division tables after the StafforDshire side recorded a useful 4-0 win over new boys Southgate to move into second place. East Grinstead take top spot after beating Loughborough Students 7-1 in a match that included a hat trick of penalty corners from Ashley Jackson and two from Barry Middleton.

Beeston play Reading tomorrow and a win for them could challenge East Grinstead's pole position. University of Exeter, back in the Premier Division after an absence of one season, were given a reality check after last week's win over Reading. They were beaten 5-1 at home this afternoon by Bowdon.

In the North Conference relegated Brookland MU are making an early bid for a return to the Premier Division with a 5-0 win over Barford Tigers. The result puts them at the top of the North table. Sheffield Hallam Civica are in second place after beating Doncaster 3-0. In the West only Whitchurch are on maximum points following their 5-1 win over debutantes Lichfield.

We were at Teddington last week to greet the home club on their return to the England Hockey League, and they recorded their first win today in an eight goal thriller at Bromley and Beckenham, from which they emerged 7-3 winners. In fact it was a high scoring day in the other three East Conference matches, with City of Peterborough beating Harleston Magpies, and Canterbury drawing 4-4 at home to Old Loughts. But the prize must go to ambitious Wimbledon for their 10-1 win over Oxted.
