READING REPLACE OVERNIGHT LEADERS

There were two matches from the Men's England Hockey League played today. Reading travelled down to Exeter University, where Jonty Clarke, Warren D'Souza, Simon Mantell and Richard Mantell, all found the net in their 4-0 win over the students. Reading overtake the overnight leaders, East Grinstead, to take the top slot.

In the Conference East, Old Loughtonians picked up some useful points away to Bromley and Beckenham. The old boys move up one place into second, whilst Bromley and Beckenham slip down to third.

EAST GRINSTEAD LET DOWN BY TERRIBLE DEFENCE

For the number of goals scored in one match, one would have thought it hard to beat the Women's Premier League match between Canterbury and Trojans in which Canterbury crushed their visitors 10-1. But TalkHockeyRadio found a 13 goal bonanza at Saint Hill, where East Grinstead were entertaining newly promoted Brooklands MU.

Brooklands won their opening match of the season last weekend when they played newly promoted Exeter University. We had not had a chance to see them contest a match against established Premiership opposition until this evening. The question was, could they compete with top opposition at this level? At first you could be forgiven for thinking they could. Early in the match their opponents, East Grinstead, were truly terrible in defence and any incursion into their 25 seemed to cause outright panic. Against this backdrop it came as no surprise when David Seddon opened the scoring for Brooklands after six minutes. East Grinstead were quick to reply via Gareth Carr and a second from Carr and one from Mark Pearn (pictured) briefly led us to believe that 'Grinstead had steadied their ship. But, in the space of four minutes, Aiden Khares and Anthony Pike found the net twice for Brooklands.

A goal from new recruit Niall Stott sent the two sides into the break with EG having a 4-3 advantage, and the late arrival of Adamson Harper seemed to bolster their defence. Gareth Carr, Mark Pearn (2) and Dave De Prez all scored for the home side, but defensive slip ups still plagued them, and two late goals from David Seddon, one of which was a penalty stroke, took some of the shine off what could have been an 8-3 win for East Grinstead. Final score 8-5.

Both teams seemed to take something away from this. East Grinstead were obviously delighted to score eight goals and Brooklands pleased to put five past the league champions. The truth is that East Grinstead will need to sort their defence out before they meet Reading next weekend and Brooklands need to reflect on how a team playing badly managed to put eight past them.

One match in the Men's Premier Division will not be played until tomorrow. That is the match between Exeter University and Reading.
