‘GRINSTEAD CRUSH SURBITON IN CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY-OFFS

The semi final matches in the Premiership Championships were played this afternoon.

TalkHockeyRadio was at Saint Hill to watch East Grinstead as they entertained Surbiton. Danny Hall, whose future in hockey had looked doubtful earlier in the season when he suffered back problems, was in scoring form as 'Grinstead crushed their visitors 5-1. Hall's 15th minute opener was followed by a Dave De Prez goal which was fired from the edge of the 'D' and hit the netting just behind the crossbar, and would be our goal of the season.

James Tindall pulled one back for Surbiton just before the break, but in the second half Mark Pearn, Danny Hall and South African international Gareth Carr added three to EG's tally to make the final score 5-1.

Meanwhile at Reading, Beeston took the other place in the final by beating the home side 2-1. Reading had opened the scoring in the second half with a Richard Springham penalty corner conversion, but goals from Andrew Monte and Matthew Taylor had given the Beeston the win.

The story was very much the same with the Women's Championships, with Reading's Kate Walsh starting proceedings with a goal in the 10th minute, only for her side to go down 2-1 to Slough. Slough's goals came from Jane Smith and Nicola White.

Canterbury were the third losing side to open the scoring, when Jenny Wilson converted a penalty corner just before half-time in their match at Leicester. Second half goals from Leicester's Katie Long and Lucy Brown turned the match in Leicester's favour.
