‘GRINSTEAD CRUSH SURBITON IN CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY-OFFS

[Photo: Danny Hall (in white) in action against Surbiton in today's Championships Play-0ff match]

The semi final matches in the Premiership Championships were played this afternoon.

TalkHockeyRadio was at Saint Hill to watch East Grinstead as they entertained Surbiton. Danny Hall, whose future in hockey had looked doubtful earlier in the season when he suffered back problems, was in scoring form as 'Grinstead crushed their visitors 5-1. Hall's 15th minute opener was followed by a Dave De Prez goal which was fired from the edge of the 'D' and hit the netting just behind the crossbar, and would be our goal of the season.

James Tindall pulled one back for Surbiton just before the break, but in the second half Mark Pearn, Danny Hall and South African international Gareth Carr added three to EG's tally to make the final score 5-1.

Meanwhile at Reading, Beeston took the other place in the final by beating the home side 2-1. Reading had opened the scoring in the second half with a Richard Springham penalty corner conversion, but goals from Andrew Monte and Matthew Taylor had given the Beeston the win.

The story was very much the same with the Women's Championships, with Reading's Kate Walsh starting proceedings with a goal in the 10th minute, only for her side to go down 2-1 to Slough. Slough's goals came from Jane Smith and Nicola White.

Canterbury were the third losing side to open the scoring, when Jenny Wilson converted a penalty corner just before half-time in their match at Leicester. Second half goals from Leicester's Katie Long and Lucy Brown turned the match in Leicester's favour.

PUMAS ARE TOP CATS

Pennine Pumas finished top of the 2010 GB Super League with four straight wins. The last of the matches in the competition were played today at Edinburgh's Peffermill stadium, but the outcomes were academic, as the Pumas had entered this weekend's matches on 9 points from three games and could not be caught.

Yesterday (Saturday) had seen the Pumas play their final match by beating Highland Jaguars 4-2, whilst Caledonian Cougars had overcome Celtic Panthers 2-0.

Today it was the turn of Saxon Tigers to play the Cougars, with their 1-1 draw given them second place in the league, although 7 points behind the Pumas. The other match, between Highland Jaguars and Celtic Panthers, ended 6-3 in favour of the Panthers.

Due to preparation for World Cup qualification tournaments involving Scotland and Wales, there was no women's Super League this year.

GB SUPER LEAGUE FINAL TABLE: 1st Pennine Pumas 12 pts (+11), 2nd Saxon Tigers 5 pts (+2), 3rd Highland Jaguars 4 pts (-3), 4th Caledonian Cougars 4 pts (-3), 5th Celtic Panthers 3 pts (-7).

CHINA WIN AT BISHAM by Peter Savage at Bisham Abbey

Great Britain's women played the first of two official capped matches at Bisham Abbey this afternoon.

In an evenly balanced first half, China took a lead in the 14th minute with a fine penalty corner strike from their captain Baorong Fu. China dominated the second half and scored a second early in the second half, again from a penalty corner, the scorer being Ye Ren.

Great Britain won a series of penalty corners towards the end of the game from which Crista Cullen found the net. Final score: 2-1 to China.

GB squad v China: Beth Storry, Laura Unsworth, Crista Cullen, Hannah McLeod, Kerry Williams, Susie Gilbert, Kate Walsh, Chloe Rogers, Rachel Walker, Alex Danson, Gemma Darrington, Nicola White, Sarah Thomas, Charlotte Craddock, Katy Long and Chloe Strong.

JAGUARS SALVAGE GB SUPER LEAGUE POINT

The GB Super League played it's second day of hockey at Lilleshall today.

Highland Jaguars managed to salvage a point in their first match of the competition, coming back in the second half from being 3-0 down. Two goals from Saxon Tigers' Tim Pinnock and a goal from Richard Springham had given Tigers the lead, but Kenny Bains' early second half goal signalled the start of a revival that saw Josh Cairns score twice from penalty corners. Final score 3-3.

Celtic Panthers had no such luck against Pennine Pumas. An early Pumas penalty corner conversion by Andy Bull was met by a reply from Ben Croxall, but four more first half goals for the Pumas from Stuart Pilgrim, Alex Edmonstone (2) and David Becket, and a second by Becket 24 minutes into the second half, gave Pumas a 6-1 victory.

The GB Super League returns on Wednesday, with Caledonian Cougars and Highland Jaguars meeting in Stirling, Scotland, and Saxon Tigers playing Pennine Pumas at Lilleshall. Next weekend will see the completion of the league, which will be played at Peffermill, Edinburgh.

BIG CATS BACK IN ACTION

The GB Super League started its 2010 programme today, although World Cup qualifying commitments for Wales and Scotland mean that this year's version is a men-only event.

The Caledonian Cougars drew first blood in their match against Pennine Pumas, with a 28th minute goal from Kelburne's Gareth Hall. This setback seemed to spark the Pumas into action, with two goals before the break from Stuart Pilgrim and Chris Griffiths. An early second half goal from Pumas' David Becket opened the margin and a 70th minute penalty corner from Simon Faulkner sealed the Cougars fate. Final score, 4-1 to the Pumas.

Today's other match saw three second half goals in Saxon Tigers game against Celtic Panthers, the three coming from Will Naylor (2) and Harry Martin on behalf of the Tigers. Final score there; 3-0 to the Tigers.

EUROHOCKEY LEAGUE LEAVES BEST UNTIL LAST by Peter Savage in Rotterdam

The EuroHockey League weekend in Rotterdam came to an exciting climax as the last of the quarter final matches was played out. In a reprise of last year's final, Bloemendaal met UHC Hamburg.

With the score 3-3 at full time, 10 minutes of silver goal time failed to resolve the issue, so the match went to the unique one-on-one shoot out used in this competition. Surprisingly, Bloemendaal failed to find the net at their first two attempts, by which time goals from Moritz and Jonas Furste were enough to secure the win for Hamburg.

Earlier in the day, Rotterdam defeated the Atletic Terrassa after the Spanish side had made an impressive second half recovery. In what was a classical game of two halves, Rotterdam had established a 3-0 lead by half time and the match eventually ended 5-3 in their favour.

IN BERLIN Olton and West Warwicks failed to progress through to Round Three of the EuroHockey Women's Club Champions Cup when they were beaten by UHC's women 5-1. Bowdon Hightown had some compensation for an unsuccessful weekend when they defeated MSC Sumchanka 2-0. Bowdon had already been eliminated from the competition and the result is only significant in terms of next season's ranking.

ENGLISH SIDES HIT BERLIN WALL by Peter Savage reporting from Rotterdam

A HAPPY EASTER FROM TALKHOCKEY RADIO!

Before looking at the two quarter final matches in the EuroHockey League in Rotterdam, we should visit Berlin for the revamped EuroHockey Women's Club Champions Cup – or EuroHockey League Lite as I like to call it - where there remained some English interest by virtue of the competition still being in the Round 1 stage.

It was not a good day for the two English clubs, although Olton & West Warwicks managed to climb through to Round 2 despite a 12-0 thrashing at the hands of Amsterdam. Friday's win against Volga Telecom means that they come second in Pool A (the third and final club is eliminated) and will meet UHC Hamburg tomorrow (Monday) for a possible place in Round 3, although a win over the Germans may be a big ask.

The club I feared for most, Bowdon Hightown, did comparatively well against Den Bosch, only losing 5-0 to a Dutch side that has traditionally been the best in Europe. Having failed to secure a win in either of their Pool D matches, Bowdon will not qualify to play for a Round 3 place.

Meanwhile in Rotterdam, we had the opportunity to see all three of the sides who had knocked out the English contenders on Friday, in their quarter final matches.

Back in Round One in Paris I would quite happily have tipped Rott-Weiss Koln as potential finalists. They have, after all, acquired some awesome talent, including Timo and Benjamin Wess, the Zeller brothers Phillip and Christopher, Tibor Weisenborn and Jan-Marco Montag to name but six. So it was a surprise to see them play out a distinctly lacklustre game against RC Polo Barcelona, the side which was Reading's nemesis of Friday. A late goal by Barcelona scored by Pau Quemada sank the German's chances of proceeding through to the semi finals. Score in that match, 3-2 to Barcelona.

The words "destroyed" and "humiliated" were going through my head after Amsterdam took a 2-0 lead against Leuven in the first ten minutes. Robert Tigges' penalty corner goal in just over 60 seconds, looked as if it might be the first of a dozen. But, as Beeston discovered on Friday, Leuven is not the easiest of sides to play, and they took some notable scalps last season on the way to a semi-final place. Indeed, they were soon back in contention with a beautiful goal from Fabrice Bourdeaud'Hui – and don't ask me to pronounce that.

Leuven seemed to be causing Amsterdam some serious issues and a defensive lapse saw the two sides draw level with a penalty corner conversion by their Irish striker, Mitch Darling. The equaliser signalled the drizzle, which has haunted this competition on and off for the last two days, to turn to rain, and the match looked as if was going to an unwanted one-to-on shoot out decider. I think we all breathed a sigh of relief, when Valentin Verga scored the winner for Amsterdam in the last two minutes of the match.

The result was a great credit to Leuven and Beeston may now be able to take some credit for suffering a defeat at the hands of the Belgians after all.

The second set of quarter finals will be played tomorrow. These are:

Rotterdam v Atletic Terrassa (12:00)
Bloemendaal v UHC Hamburg (14:30)

Today in Europe – from Peter Savage in Rotterdam

There was no English interest in today's EuroHockey League in Rotterdam after all three English clubs were eliminated yesterday, but there was plenty of action to interest the neutral hockey fan and the chance to benchmark the performances of Beeston, Reading and East Grinstead, yesterday.

The day's first match seemed to have been sewn up by Atletic Terrassa, who had a 4-1 lead until 13 minutes into the second half. Two quick goals from Grunwald Poznan set the game alight, and although both sides had chances, the score became firmly stuck on 4-3.

Terrassa go through to Round 3 on Monday, when they will play Rotterdam, who fought out a battle royal against Club Egara. Rotterdam took the lead in the 3rd minute with a field goal from their captain Willem Hertzberger. Eduard Arbos equalised six minutes later but the whole issue was decided on a penalty stroke in the 19th minute, converted by another of the three Hertsbergers in the side, Jeroen. The game fizzled out a bit after the that, with occasional fireworks, but the match ended at 2-1 in Rotterdam's favour.

Bloemendaal gave Der Club an der Alster a lesson in attacking hockey, with their captain Tuen De Nooijer scoring what might be the goal of the tournament with a long solo run and a strike from the edge of the 'D'. Alster had made a game of it, twice coming from behind to level the scores, but the Dutch were a class above them and four second half goals sank the German's chances of progressing through to Round 3. Final score 6-2 to Bloemendaal.

Bloemendaal's opponents in Round 3 will be UHC Hamburg, who comprehensively beat Waterloo Ducks 6-2. Fittingly, the ducks are a game side and can sometimes spring the odd surprise, and two late second half goals proved this. By this time they were already six goals adrift and the game ended at 6-2.

Tomorrow's line up is:

Amsterdam v Leuven (12:00 local time)

RC Polo Barcelona v Rot Weiss Koln

IN THE WOMEN'S EUROPEAN CLUB CHAMPIONS CUP IN BERLIN Bowdon Hightown suffered a 2-1 defeat in the opening match at the hands of Ata Sport.

ENGLAND - ALL OUT FOR THREE by Peter Savage in Rotterdam

Picture: East Grinstead celebrate Gareth Carr's penalty corner conversion.

Any English interest disappeared at the EuroHockey League Round Two in Rotterdam today when all three English clubs were eliminated.

It was a little unfortunate that Beeston, Reading and East Grinstead found themselves playing one after the other in cab-rank style on the same day, but there was a bright side to what was an otherwise dismal one for the English teams.

Beeston needed to be early risers, starting their match at 09:30 in the morning, and unfortunately the early start seemed to impact on their play. Their opponents were Belgian side Leuven, who they had trounced in Round One in Paris in the Autumn. Of all the English sides, Beeston probably had the weakest opponents. Unfortunately Beeston put in the weakest performance.

A generally dull first half was livened up by a 28th minute penalty conversion by Beeston's Andrew Monte, and a bit of controversy on the stroke of half-time. Pressing for a second goal in their opponent's circle, Beeston found themselves torn between making a video appeal for an infringement or running back to defend a Leuven breakaway. They opted for the latter – if an appeal had been made play would have been stopped – and the half time hooter sounded before they could lodge the request. A lesson learnt there for the future.

Whether that unsettled Beeston or not, it is hard to say, but they let the match run away from them in the second half, finally losing it 3-1.

Next up was Reading, who found themselves in a re-match of last season's Round Two, playing RC Polo de Barcelona. Their last meeting was settled on a penalty stroke in Reading's favour. This year it was Barcelona's turn to have the stroke, with recent signing Matthias Witthaus stepping up to give the Spanish the lead in the 19th minute.

This season's match bore many of the hallmarks of last season's meet, with Barcelona having the lion's share of the possession but unable to penetrate some gritty Reading defending. Nick Brothers proved what a worthy successor he is to Simon Mason in the Reading goal with some outstanding work.

It was a transformed Reading that came out for the second half, determined to get back into the match and it was very much against the general run of play that Paul Quemada scored Barcelona's second. Reading kept pressing and eventually Jonty Clarke was rewarded from a penalty corner. The alert may have noticed that all three goals were scored by players who have recently returned from the World Cup, where they played for three different nations.

The match finally ended 2-1 to Barcelona, but the Reading boys had put up a good fight.

East Grinstead have shown every sign of late of taking over the mantle from Reading of being the Euro-experts, and they proved it again today against Asterdam.

EG had clearly done their homework on Amsterdam and unsettled their opponents several times by slinging the ball down the length of the pitch in an attempt to stretch them in the midfield. This, matched with some good off-the-ball work, eventually brought its reward with a 10th minute penalty corner scored by South African international, Gareth Carr.

'Grinstead held onto their lead until the 44th minute when they conceded a penalty corner, a daunting prospect when your opponents have Taeke Taekema playing for them. At the second attempt Taekema put a relatively soft shot, by his standards, low into the net to equalise.

Amsterdam held onto their lead for less than five minutes, when Carr stepped up to score from a penalty stroke resulting from a video appeal for a back stick. The next 22 minutes were inevitably going to be the longest in the history of hockey, but it took less than ninety seconds for East Grinstead have victory snatched away from them. Tired legs started to leave holes in their defence, and they were punished with goals from Verga and Prins in the 55th and 56th minute respectively.

The final score was 3-2 to Amsterdam, but EG had played well and compliments flowed from all directions, not least from their opponents.

IN THE WOMEN'S EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS CUP IN BERLIN, only one English team was in action today. Olton and West Warwicks beat Volga Telecom 1-0. The other English side, Bowdon Hightown, play tomorrow.
