BOWDON AVOID RELEGATION PLAY OFF

The women's England Hockey League came to an end this afternoon and, with no outstanding matches, we can now see who the winners and losers are in the 2009-2010 season.

Most of the issues in the Premier Division had already been decided, with the exception of who would fill the relegation play-off place. The fixture list threw up a last day match between the contenders, Bowdon Hightown and Clifton. Sally Walton's penalty corner shooting was on target for Bowdon, and two goals from her and a goal from Kate Perry were enough to give them a 3-1 four point margin over Clifton.

Olton and West Warwicks gave relegated Trojans their first win of the season, when they lost 2-0 away. After a promising start, Olton have not won a match since Christmas. Leicester kept up their unbeaten run with a 2-1 win at Canterbury, whilst the fight for second place in the table was won by Reading, whose 1-1 draw against Slough was enough to keep them two points clear of Slough.

The promotion tussle at the top of the Women's East Conference was taken to the wire with both the contender ending their matches in a draw. Sevenoaks came from 0-2 behind at Harleston to draw 2-2. Meanwhile, Ipswich win the promotion play-off place on goal difference after an equaliser against Old Loughtonians in the last two minutes. The score there was also 2-2.

A goalfest at the top of the West Conference gave wins to both the front runners. Cannock put nine past Firebrands who could only reply with a single goal. Cannock qualify for the promotion play-offs on goal difference with a massive 14 goal leads over Barnes Hounslow Ealing. Barnes won their match against Staines 5-2.

Moving on to the last of the women's Conferences, there was a points margin between the leaders in the North Conference this morning, albeit a slender one, and it remained after this afternoon's matches. University of Durham take the play-off place by winning 4-1 at neighbours Sunderland. Sutton Coldfield had a good 6-2 win at home to Loughborough Students, but finish the season in second place, three points behind Durham.
