NEW GIRLS WIN OPENING MATCHES BUT BOWDON GO TOP

(Photo: Alex Danson in unfamiliar colours, playing for her new club Reading, against Slough. www.HockeyImages.co.uk).

The 2009-2010 England Hockey League started today with a full programme of women's matches.

Always of interest are the newly promoted clubs, and the new contingent in the Premier Division got off to a cracking start. University of Birmingham were visited by Poynton in their new reincarnation as Brooklands Poynton. The students bettered their visitors 3-2 with goals from Jo Turnbull and Sophie Bray (2). However the match of the day was expected to be the meeting between new girls, Reading, and Slough, a match of particular interest due to the number of England internationals who have recently transferred their allegiance to Reading.

In actual fact Reading only fielded two of their internationals, Jo Ellis and Alex Danson. Watching were Beth Storry (injured) and Lisa Wooding (recently become a mum), with Kate Walsh and Helen Richardson taking a well-earned rest after Amsterdam. Ironically the only international to score was Slough's Ashleigh Ball, who cancelled out Becky Odlin's earlier effort. Two second half goals from Vicky Bryant emphasised that the new girls are potential champions, with or without their full compliment of England players. Final score 3-1 to Reading.

The Tina Cullen show was back after the summer break, with Bowdon taking the top spot in the Premiership after she scored all three of her side's goals during their visit to Clifton.

It was a mixed day for the clubs new to the national league. Cambridge City were on the wrong end of a 6-2 thrashing by Horsham in the East Conference, whilst Northampton Saints lost 3-1 to recently relegated Chelmsford. Ex Bowdon girl Julie Hope, now in Sunderland colours, scored both her side's goals in a local derby against debutantes University of Durham in the North Conference. Buckingham's recent meteoric rise to national league status was not halted as they beat Swansea 2-0 in the West Conference, whilst Bath Buccaneers initiation at this level saw them draw at Aldridge 1-1.
