SURBITON’S LOSS IS WIMBLEDON’S GAIN

Photo: Action from the match between East Conference Wimbledon and Sevenoaks (HockeyImages.co.uk).

New boys Canterbury marked their return to the Premier Division with a 3-2 win away at Brooklands this afternoon. But the result everyone was interested in was Surbiton's first outing after the loss of several key players to East Conference Wimbledon, including Ben Hawes and Rob Moore. In fairness, neither Hawes or Moore would have been available due to international commitments, but Surbiton had a torrid time at Beeston, going down 6-2. Elsewhere in the Premier Division, East Grinstead clearly has not lost any form over the Summer break, with Gareth Carr on target from penalty corners in their 6-3 win away at Loughborough Students.

TalkHockeyRadio was at Wimbledon to see how national league debutantes Wimbledon would fare against Sevenoaks in their East Conference match. For a side that is new to this level of hockey, Wimbledon started the match full of confidence – sometimes too much, and suffered several midfield turnovers as a result. But they were good enough to go into the half-time break at 2-0, thanks to goals from Tom Kavanagh and Surbiton exile Dominic Graham. Sevenoaks had far the greater share of the possession in the second half, particularly in the last fifteen minutes, and reaped the reward when Richard Blakelsey found the net. Final score 2-1 in Wimbledon's favour. Overall, good - but not good enough to set this conference alight just yet, until perhaps, their two internationals become available. Images from this match will be available on our images web site at www.HockeyImages.co.uk in the next few days.

It was an unhappy baptism for Olton & West Warwicks and Ben Rhydding, newly promoted to the North Conference. Olton went down 1-3 at home to Doncaster, whilst Ben Rhydding's visit to Barford Tigers saw them come away 2-1 losers.

In the West, recently relegated University of Exeter gave notice that they are not to be messed with, with an 8-1 win over Stourport. Team Bath Buccaneers renewed their bid for promotion to the Premier Division with a 4-2 win over newly promoted Cheltenham.
