JUNIOR WORLD CUP RESULTS HIT NEW LOW

England's dreadful performance in the Junior World Cup hit a new low earlier today when they were defeated 9-0 in Singapore. In a repeat of Monday's match against Japan, they conceded a goal within the first minute. England's tormentors on this occasion were India, who were 5-0 up before the break.

The best that England can now expect is 15^th. They will play South Africa on either Friday or Saturday to decide.

ENGLAND ON BACK FOOT FROM START. News from the Junior World Cup in Malaysia/Singapore.

England's second round match in Pool G earlier today (Monday) got off to a disastrous start when they conceded a penalty corner against Japan with less than 30 seconds on the clock. The corner, which was converted by Japan's captain Ryota Kubo, put England on the back foot from the outset.

Stourport's Chris Giffiths levelled the scores early in the second half, taking advantage of a rebound from a penalty corner but Kubo was to have the last say with his second penalty corner conversion of the match, 23 minutes into the half. Final score 2-1 to Japan.

England are firmly wedged at the bottom of Pool G in what has been a disappointing tournament. The best they can now hope for is to finish 13^th out of 16. England's next second round match will be against India in Singapore on Friday. The match has been moved back to later in the day to allow England time to travel to Singapore. The match was initially scheduled for early in the day.

EXCELLENT START FIZZLES OUT by Peter Savage in Nottingham

England's women played their second match in a two-match series against Spain in Nottingham this afternoon. It was a game where England showed much promise, with some excellent individual skills in evidence, but which seemed to fizzle out in the second half.

Helen Richardson (shown here with her 100^th cap, presented by England Hockey president Martin Gotheridge on Saturday) opened the scoring after 17 minutes and Chloe Strong followed up with a penalty corner conversion eight minutes later. But the match slid from being dazzling to tedious in the second half, despite Alex Danson's early penalty corner conversion. Spain had their chances and Beth Story made a series of fine saves throughout the match. But she was unable to stop Gloria Comerna's 56^th minute penalty corner strike, which gave the visitors their only goal of the match.

Final score 3-1 to England.

MEN'S JUNIOR WORLD CUP

England suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Belgium in their first second round match in Malaysia earlier today. England were two behind by the break and were not able to get back into the match.

There was no play in the Men's Junior World Cup today (Saturday). England's next match is tomorrow against Belgium in the second stage non-medal round. England go on to play Japan on Monday and India on Wednesday.

A LONG SHOT by Pat Rowley in Nottingham

It needed a splendidly taken goal by England newcomer Kate Long to bring England to life in the first of their two weekend internationals against Spain at Nottingham. Though more dominant in the second half, England could not capitalise further and the match finished as a tame 1-1 draw.

Long's goal was a quick riposte to Spain who had scored at the start of the second half. Raquel Huertas who was given a free shot after sloppy defensive play by England. Huertas must have been relieved. She had shot weakly straight at England goalkeeper Beth Storry from an 18^th minute Spanish penalty stroke.

Long, the Leicester 21 year old playing her 5^th international, scored with a fierce cross shot after Alex Danson had opened up the Spanish defence and Jo (Hightown) Ellis had squared the ball to her. It was her second international goal in successive matches.

England coach, Danny Kerry, described England's performance "as about four out of ten" but praised Long "for taking her chance so well". He felt his rebuilt squad made far too many errors.

ENGLAND NOT SIMPLY THE BEST by Peter Savage in Nottingham – plus the latest from the Junior World Cup

There was a certain irony when the public address system at Highfields played 'Simply the Best' after Jonty Clarke scored his 66^th minute goal against Australia in the second test match in Nottingham this evening. England were 4-0 down at the time and the scoreline indicates who were the best team on the pitch. Despite that, the overall margins between the two teams were not that great and it was a series of errors by England, rather than the Australians dominating the match, which led to them losing the match.

In the opening exchanges there was not much to choose between the teams but two goals in three minutes shortly before the break – the first from Chris Ciriello from a penalty corner and the second by Glenn Turner – put the Australians into the driving seat for the restart. England had a second lapse when first Glenn Simpson and then Jamie Dwyer put two more goals to the credit of the Australians.

The final score: 4-1 to Australia.

The match was attended by just under a thousand spectators. It is the turn of England's women tomorrow when they take on Spain in the first of two test matches.

Despite enjoying most of the possession, they were only able to add one more goal before the final hooter, scored off the stick of Chris Gregg. Final score: 4-0 to England.
The three points from this game leaves England in fourth place, three points adrift of Spain and Malaysia who are both on six.

ENGLAND PUT IN BETTER PERFORMANCE AGAINST AUSTRALIANS

England shrugged off their recent 5-2 defeat against the Australians in the Hamburg Masters with a better performance against the Koobaburras in the first of two test matches at Highfields, Nottingham, last night.

The match got off to an unpromising start with the visitors' Chris Cirello scoring twice from corners in the first ten minutes, but Ben Hawes managed to pull one back before Cirello cracked in another from a corner to earn his hat trick. Ashley Jackson reduced the deficit to one, with a penalty corner strike shortly before the break. England had two more scoring chances before the half-time hooter sounder, with a Jackson corner strike hitting the crossbar and a Martin Jones reverse stick shot going high.

The second half saw a 20 minute period without a goal until Australia's Luke Doerner found the net from a penalty corner. Australia drew three ahead four minutes later when Jason Wilson found the net from open play. It was not over for England yet, with Jackson scoring from a penalty corner in the 63^rd minute and following this up with another corner conversion in the 70^th minute. Final score 5-4 to Australia.

England play Australia in the second and final test match at Highfields on Friday evening.

ENGLAND GO DOWN IN SECOND WORLD CUP MATCH

 England's Junior World Cup team in Malaysia emerged from their second Pool C match without a point after their match against Spain earlier today. England conceded two goals to Spain in the first half and it was only in the dying seconds of the match that Bowdon's Alex Edmonstone found the net with a cracking shot into the left bottom corner of the Spanish goal. Final score 2-1 to Spain.

England's next match will be against the USA on Thursday. The USA have enjoyed a torrid time in the tournament so far, conceding 16 goals in only two matches.

ENGLAND MEN SUFFER DOUBLE DEFEAT

England lost their opening match in the Standard Chartered Junior World Cup in sweltering conditions in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, earlier today (Sunday). Playing the host side in front of a capacity stadium, Malaysia dominated the first half, with Faizal Saari scoring from a penalty corner in the 29^th minute. Although England's performance improved in the second half, they were not able to penetrate the Malaysian defence and Saari's goal remained the only goal of the match.

England's next match is against Spain on Tuesday.

In Hamburg England came close to beating the Netherlands in their final match of the Hamburg Masters, although ironically it was England's players based with Dutch side HGC who made the major goal scoring contribution. Although Floris Evers opened the scoring after only four minutes for the Netherlands, it was goals from Barry Middleton, Ashley Jackson and Matt Daly that took England into the second half with a 3-1 advantage. It was an advantage which England built on early in the second half when Barry Middleton scored his second. Unfortunately, the Dutch clawed their way back into the match with goals from Rogier Hofman, Roderick Weusthof (2) and Marcel Balkestein. Final score 5-1 to the Netherlands.
